The cause helps fuel Julien as he trains and pushes through the long legs of his trek. Last year's Northern Trek was also sparked by a different motivation—retribution. The story began in 2019 when Julien was training for his 180-kilometre run from Edson to Japser and was called to respond in the early stages of the Chuckegg Creek wildfire. Training was replaced by 16-18-hour days, assisting with operations and evacuation planning. Determined to rise to the challenge, Julien proceeded with his run as planned. Unfortunately, by the time he made it to Hinton, his body had other plans. Julien had to hit the pause button before returning to finish the run a couple of months later.
Julien dedicated 2020's Northern Trek to the Chuckegg Creek wildfire. His route went from La Crete to High Level and from Paddle Prairie back to High Level again, running through communities that were directly or indirectly impacted by the fire. “Chuckegg Creek wildfire kicked my butt,” says Julien. “It caused me some injuries and lots of regrets in that I wasn't able to finish my goal in one shot. So I decided that I'd go back and kick it's butt.”
And that’s what he did. Julien raised over $16,000 for CFFF in 2020. Now, he’s got Northern Trek 2021 in his sights. His goals for this year's run? “Finish, raise money for the foundation and definitely keep bringing awareness to the importance of firefighter health and wellness,” Julien says. “Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.”
