Amanda’s a perfect example of a program graduate growing up and giving back. She says it’s gratifying to see kids making a similar journey through the HYC. “There's some kids that started at six-years-old when I was [a teenager] working here. I’ve seen them come all the way through the programs, move away and start their lives…I think that’s the best feeling ever.”
But that’s not the only thing Amanda loves about HYC. She learned early on that making a difference and having fun go hand-in-hand. The idea of “fun” permeates all HYC initiatives; from the programs to the board of directors to the fundraisers. “Being involved is just so easy because you enjoy doing the work,” says Amanda. “You kind of get to be a kid again and be excited about everything that's going on here…And there's a sense of importance to it."
The Stettler community recognizes that importance as well — especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Amanda has been approached by individuals and businesses wanting to help, a reflection of the strong community support for the HYC. “It’s reassuring to know that through all of this, people are thinking about us,” she says. “They know the importance of our Youth Center and that so many of the kids need us right now because this is their outlet. This is their place.”
And it’s the heart of their community too.
